While Phnom Penh internet speeds will not match what you get at home, they’re still pretty great for a developing country.
Internet providers
Opennet, Online, Digi, and Ezecom all offer internet service in Phnom Penh for both homes and businesses. Their prices change regularly (it’s getting less and less expensive) so it’s best to call and check what they are currently offering. Below you’ll find our choices for ADSL, fiber, 3G and 4G internet connections in Phnom Penh.
Opennet and Digi offers the best value for money, with speeds many times what you’ll get with Online or Ezecom at rock-bottom prices. However, their most popular service is ADSL and slows down when many users are active. Both are now offering more expensive fiber connections with prices that seem to drop every month, so we won’t bother to quote them here. If you’re trying to choose between one or the other, Digi is known for terrible customer service, while Opennet is known for merely mediocre customer service.
Online and Ezecom, Cambodia’s first ISPs, offer fiber connections at prices that are reminiscent of the 1990s. Expect to pay upwards of $70 for a 1 Mbps connection. However, they are both known to be more reliable than some of the newer entrants to the market.
3g and 4g data internet providers
Many expats choose to take advantage of the broad 3g and now 4g coverage in the country by using a 3g/4g modem. We’ve also got a whole blog post about data internet packages in Cambodia if you want to know even more than we’ve got listed below.
Popular packages are with phone providers such as Metfone and Cellcard. Metfone offers a monthly package of 20gb for $20 and sells the portable modem for $30. Cellcard offers 15gb for $20 and 45gb for $50. With both of these options it’s best to check your coverage, because while some areas of Phnom Penh have great connections, other centrally located apartments are dead zones. We speak from experience here. Smart also offers 4G connections, although our experiments with that service were not successful. All 3G providers in Cambodia allow tethering at the current time, so you can set up your phone as a wireless hotspot for your laptop, if you’re so inclined.
