The 252 is a contemporary oasis on a quiet street between the hip BKK1 district and the must-see Royal Palace, steps from Independence Monument, and a short tuk tuk ride to the Riverside neighborhood. A true boutique hotel in a sea of “boutique” fakers, the 252 is decorated minimally with beautiful non-traditional linens — warm neutrals paired with tasteful floral patterns — juxtaposed with modern concrete fixtures and furnishings.
Tasteful? Check. Minimal? Check.
Dark concrete floors lend a minimal coolness to the otherwise bright rooms, which feature flattering lighting and bedside lamps. Mini-fridge, kettle, and flat-screen TV round out the amenities. There is also ample storage space, with a tiered built-in concrete shelving unit and clothes rack, along with a desk, concrete bedside tables, and a small but comfortable day bed for lounging.
The large, clean bathroom includes a semi-enclosed Western-style shower with good water temperature and pressure. A large counter around the sink offers ample space for guests to stash toiletries.
Ground-floor rooms have small garden areas and pool views. Rooms on higher floors either look out over neighborhood alleys and rooftops — not much to see there — or feature balconies overlooking the pool.

This is perhaps the main draw of The 252: the beautiful blue-tiled pool, surrounded by leafy greenery and semi-private lounge cabanas, where you can order food and drinks from the bar, although neither collations or libations are particularly worthy of mention. Nevertheless, the pool is a great place to relax and recover from the frenetic pace of a day in Phnom Penh.
The style of the hotel overall is influenced by the New Khmer Architecture movement — whitewashed concrete, angular iron railings — and the breezy hallways feature large color photographs of the people and culture of Cambodia. The advertised rate for a standard double is $55. You may find slightly lower rates on Booking.com or Agoda, but sometimes direct booking rates are cheaper.
