How to get from the new airport into Siem Reap

Gone are the days of quick Siem Reap airport transfers. The new Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport (SAI), opened last year to much grumbling and is 50 kilometers out of Siem Reap proper. With the new location it now takes between 45 and 90 minutes to get to and from the Siem Reap airport, not to mention it’s more expensive, so it’s worth doing a little research before your flight.

Everything you need to know about how to get to the new Siem Reap Airport.

Taking a taxi or minivan from Siem Reap airport

By car, the trip to the Siem Reap International Airport takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Both car and minivan taxis are available. If you book in advance the cost is between $25 and $30 for cars and $30 to $40 for minivans. Cars can be quite small in Siem Reap, so if you are more than one or two people and have substantial luggage, go for the van option.

I can recommend our friend Kunthea who offers both car and taxi service. You can contact her at +85593273313 by phone, WhatsApp or Telegram to make a booking. You can also use the Grab app to hire a car on the spot, or get an official airport taxi at the airport.

Taking a tuk tuk from Siem Reap airport

By tuk tuk, it takes about 90 minutes to get to the airport and costs around $15. You can ask any tuk tuk driver in Siem Reap and negotiate the price, and you’ll also find tuk tuks waiting just outside the airport gates.

You can also use the Grab app to hire a tuk tuk to the airport, but choose the remorque option if you are more than one person and have luggage — the standard tuk tuks on Grab are the Indian-style ones which are very small and cannot fit two people with luggage. The remorques are the regular, larger tuk tuks you see around town. If you do take a tuk tuk, please tip as the costs for the drivers are high and it’s not very profitable.

There are multiple types of airport transfers to SAI.

Taking a shuttle bus from Siem Reap airport

The cheapest way to get from Siem Reap to and from the airport is by shared shuttle bus. This takes about an hour and costs between $8 and $9. Shared shuttle services have a limit of two pieces of luggage and one handbag per passenger. Be sure to check the times before you fly as schedules change regularly, and can be reduced during low season.

    Hello Lina,
Thanks for your website feedback on taxi.
I”m arriving to Airport and need to move to Siem Reap downtown to Shinta mani resort.
I read that taxi drivers are trying to stay with you along your time in visiting city till u leave . Is it true or just a web noise ?
My idea is to book separately my tour to temples and no burden/mix with airport from/to airport.
Thanks in advance for your feedback

      Hello mario ,
How was the experience finding rides in siem reap

        Rox says:

Hey Rajan, I was in Siem Reap last quarter of 2016 and there was no problem at all findings rides! I got mine at the bus terminal as I was dropped from HCMC – all in at USD25 (to hostel-angkor temples-hostel-terminal) so I guess it was pretty decent deal considering I was alone. I read somewhere that some drivers can even add up to USD10!

Let me know if you have new info as I will be going back this December. :D

    Hi lina,

Your site has been a major help in trip planning. We reach from Sihanoukville to Siem Reap in the evening and have a flight from SR, the next morning. Is there any hostel/budget hotel you could suggest for us to crash the night?

Hi all I arrive in Siam reap approx 1pm on Marxh 9th and would like to go directly to battambang. Do you have any recommendations on which taxi service can take me and how much will it cost us??

Hi there, we only have two days in Siem Reap then two days in Phnom Penh before flying home – would you recommend getting the bus from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh or flying? Were trying to maximise our time in both places. Thanks

    Yung says:

How big is Siem Reap? Is 8-hours Siem Reap city taxi trip that costs US$38.50 reasonable? Includes a number of stops in Siem Reap to visit offices and tourist destinations outside Angkor.

      Lina says:

      Seems reasonable to me.

      Tamara Richardson says:

Hmmm.. as an expact who’s lived in Siem Reap for long periods of time, $38.50 is pretty expensive. But that depends entirely on how many people are using the taxi. I know that you can hire a taxi for a full day to take you sight seeing for $10.00 or even $20.00, but again, there’s that question of whether you don’t mind spending that money considering this is how they make their living.

    Alex Mahone says:

Hi Can you advise on Siem reap to Phnom Penh by Taxi. Is it good option and if you can advise any reliable taxi operators

    Nev says:

    Thanks for the info!
    I am arriving tomorrow.
Can you also walk from the airport into town?
