Located on beautiful Coconut Beach, Koh Rong Resort is one of the most upscale options on the island.
Coconut Beach is a lovely stretch of white sand looking onto calm, blue-green waters. So calm, in fact, than when the sea is too rough to dock on other nearby beaches, boats come here. Nestled in the center of the beach is Koh Rong’s most upscale accommodation — the new Koh Rong Resort, which boasts 21 air-conditioned villas and a crystal-clear pool that looks out onto the sea.
The modern villas, which snake up a hill behind the pool and main building, are surrounded by lush jungle gardens. When we visited, the pool was sparkling blue but there were no staff to be found and no one appeared to be staying there. Granted, it was low season. We searched for a member of the staff so that we could see one of the villas, to no avail. Eventually we walked up the hill and resorted to peeking in the sliding glass doors to see what Koh Rong Resort had to offer. Embarrassing, but we’ll go to almost any lengths to research the island’s accommodations.
From what we could see, the villas are well-designed, each with an air-conditioning unit, flat-screen TV, and either a lounge seating area or a writing desk. The bathrooms are the nicest on the island, complete with bathtubs, although, in a particularly kinky touch, they are separated from the bedroom only by glass.
Electricity is available between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. so that you can run your air-conditioner at night, but at these prices 24-hour electricity should be a given. We assume that come high season they will realize this and get another generator. They also do not offer internet at the time of writing, but you can get a Smart SIM card in Sihanoukville with a data plan for a couple of bucks. Again, at these rates they should offer WiFi.
To get to Koh Rong Resort you can take one of the speed ferries to Koh Toch and a longtail from there, which will cost $20 to $30. Or you can take the Daem Thkov Village boat for $5 each way; it leaves at 3 p.m. every day from Sihanoukville Port, Pier 52. Sometimes they will drop you off at Koh Rong Resort for free, but sometimes you’ll need to give the driver an extra $5.
We were quoted the following prices at Koh Rong Resort:
- Deluxe villa: $100 in low season, $300 in high season
Bookings can be made through Agoda or Booking.com. Prices are cheaper on Agoda by $5 to $25. When booking, be aware that you will need to pay in cash at the resort and that there are no ATMs available on the island.
