Review: Samnang Restaurant, Sihanoukville

We’ve eaten at Samnang Restaurant several times and it keeps getting better. In our opinion it’s the best BBQ/soup joint in Sihanoukville and offers excellent value for money. At only $5.99 for an all-you-can-eat meal, it’s not only easy on the wallet, but really tasty.

If Cambodian volcano BBQ is new to you, the set up is pretty simple. After you sit down a bucket of red hot coals is lowered into the specially designed table and topped with a bowl which serves as your soup pot and cooking area. A basic soup stock is provided but the rest is up to you; choose what takes your fancy and either cook it up on the grill or drop it in your broth to make a delicious soup. It’s a fun, sociable way of enjoying a meal and is great for groups.

There’s a large selection of meat and seafood available at Samnang, including sesame marinated beef, pork, and chicken (as well as un-marinated), liver, and slices of good quality mini beef steaks. Seafood-wise there’s usually a good selection of scallops, decent-sized prawns, squid, and sliced marlin. All the food is fresh; the trays are small and are replaced as needed so food isn’t sitting around very long.

Got a lot of friends? Samnang Restaurant is great for groups.

We really enjoy the meat and fish options, but we do occasionally succumb to the odd vegetable and there is a fair bit to choose from including baby corn, Chinese cabbage, straw mushrooms, spinach, and broccoli, among others. There’s also a selection of noodles, both instant and fresh, and eggs to add to your soup, as well as a good range of condiments. Our tip is to make your own lime and pepper sauce for the meat and seafood; delicious! It’s probably not suitable for strict vegetarians as the stock contains meat and delicious pork fat is used on the grill surface.

Beer is available in all the usual sizes, priced from 3,000 riel ($0.75), but if there are a few of you, order a tower. They also offer a selection of soft drinks. We’ve always found the service good, with friendly and attentive staff.

Samnang Restaurant is a little bit out of town, but that just means that luckily you’re away from the chaos of the Downtown area. Five Man Brewery is next door, and they make for a good combo on a night out. If you’re getting a tuk tuk there get your driver’s number for the return trip as it can be quiet later in the evening, but the staff can arrange it for you if needed.
