If you’re looking for peace and quiet, Sunset Beach Bungalows offers blissful solitude and beautiful views.
Located on the northwestern tip of Koh Rong Sanloem, Sunset Beach Bungalows has eight wooden bungalows overlooking the rocky shore of M’phey Bei. Although the sunset views here are the best in the village, do not confuse this with the beach called Sunset Beach, which is on the western side of the island and a boat ride away.
Sunset Beach Bungalows used to be the home of Eco-Sea Diving, but since the new owners took over they have built all new bungalows and spruced the place up considerably. Each of the eight large bungalows is quite simple, with a bed, mosquito net, and ensuite bathroom with cool-water shower.
There are three types of bungalows priced between $20 and $40, depending on the size and time of year: bungalows with double beds or with two twin beds, and one triple with three beds. All have a private balcony with a table and chairs looking out onto the sea, and a conveniently located hammock.
One of the most appealing things about Sunset Beach Bungalows is also its downfall. The eight bungalows are spaced far apart along 250 meters of coastline, which allows for quiet reflection or a romantic weekend a world away from the backpacker hub in the nearby village.
But the furthest bungalow is a ten-minute walk from the Sunset Beach entrance and restaurant down a well-worn but rocky path that is sometimes blocked by grazing cows during the day and isn’t lit at night. Guests who stay here and plan to go out in the village at night (the Sunset Beach restaurant closes at 9:30 p.m.) will want to make sure to bring a flashlight.
The Sunset Beach restaurant is known as one of the better choices for Western food on this part of the island, serving a range of European and Khmer fare. We tried a pasta dish and for island food it was pretty good. The communal area attached to the bar and restaurant has tables and chairs and floor mats for lounging as well as excellent sunset views. They also rent out snorkeling gear and kayaks here.
Overall, Sunset Beach Bungalows offers one of the only options in M’phey Bei aimed at non-backpackers. We think its spacious bungalows and stunning views make it one of the better options on this part of the island.
